Stop spending time with the wrong people…

Life is too short to spend time with people who suck the happiness out of you. If someone wants you in their life, they’ll make room for you. You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot. Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth. And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.

Not sure how this one applies to me. Outside work pretty much the only people I spend time with are my family. At work I don’t have much option on who I spend time with unless I change roles or jobs (hmmm…).

Seems the statement is more around “quit trying to impress others”. I don’t think I spend much time worrying about this.

Thoughts for the new year…

Came across a great blog post at http://www.marcandangel.com/2011/12/11/30-things-to-stop-doing-to-yourself/. Over the next 30 or so days I plan to work through each point…

Resolutions…

Funny how easy it is to think about making resolutions (especially at the end of the year) but then how little we think about keeping them. Hoping that this year I use the reminder of God’s faithfulness to help me stay on top of the little things that I commit to do over the year.

Sharing opportunities

I find it interesting that I seem to find many more opportunities to share my faith when traveling than with the typical day to day activities when I’m home. I just spent a couple of weeks in China and had 3 separate events that allowed me to share the importance of Christ in my life and the reasons for that. This is as many times as probably the last 6 months at home.

This makes me wonder what is different about traveling that either presents the opportunity or enables the boldness necessary to speak up. Two of these cases came in a purely social setting after work over a beer and one came during during a lunch break discussion. I think a key point is that in all three cases I was spending time with other people less familiar to me. When I’m on my home turf, probably 90% or more of my time is either by myself or with my family.

Pray: Lord, please help me to make time for spreading your good news while still respecting time with my family.

Thought Life…

Just finished a two-book series called “The Fourth Awakening”. Concept is that society is undergping the next round of enlightenment and a company (with government funding) has developed a technology to accelerate/ control it. There are some really intriguing concepts in the book, central of which is that we must release all out negative thoughts/ baggage in order to connect to the universe. Once we do this and we think positive thoughts then those things we wish for will happen.

There is a lot of new-age type stuff in this but also truth well aligned with God’s word. Key points are that we must forgive (release) and repent (stop those negative things) in order to connect with God (universe). There are numerous excellent examples that closely parallel things in my life or the lives of those around but the one that stands out the most is how our baggage from the past infiltrates or colors everything we are about. Until giving that up, we can’t really be whole and in tune with God.

This is a great reminder about the need to control my thought life. When I allow negative thinking to take foothold in my mind I diminish my potential.

The physical and the spiritual

Been spending a lot of time in Casinos the past 2 weeks and find it interesting how in this unlikely place the fabric separating our physical world from the spiritual world seems to thin. No where else does one see such a range of humanity. From ecstasy to despair, people display a wide range of perspective. For most, God seems far from this place and maybe that is why I seem to see e spiritual world more clearly. In this environment I find nothing of God’s creation other than His created people.

We chase dreams that usually involve “getting more” but God wants us to chase dreams of “doing more”. I also find myself desiring to step out and experience the wonder of His creation. Be that the mountains and desert around Las Vegas or the expansive Gulf of Mexico outside Biloxi.

Thanking God today for the gentle reminder that He is God and He is always there for me.

On the relationship of faith and doubt…

Been way too long since I wrote here…

God speaks to me in several ways but most common is through music or reading. Most of my reading is “Christian fiction”. I just finished an “end times” series that had some great food for thought. One concept that stood out was on dealing with doubt through faith.

The author spent considerable time developing the importance of “trusting in the unseen”, making the point that if we only believe based on what we see then we have no room for faith. As I thought about this I realized the perfect setup that God uses. Whenever I am having doubts I can be assured that God is probably asking me to trust Him in something. As I act on this and place my trust in Him, my appreciation for and practice of faith grows (something like exercising a muscle).

Lost Bible

Talk about a traumatic event – I seem to have lost my print Bible. I think I set it on top of the car today when loading Melody into the car after church and must have drove of with it still there. We drove back a little later to look for it but didn’t find it.

Ironically, I almost never open the print Bible anymore except in church. All my Bible reading is now on my iPad or iPhone. Not sure why I haven’t taken it to church yet. I guess this is the kick-start.

Responding to faith “attacks”

I was flying home from a business trip last night and the guy behind me was talking with his seat mate about a number of things, eventually coming around to the topic of religious beliefs. Guy A was an American and the main conversationalist while Guy B was from India.

Guy A: “I think we are all like sea scum, one day our bubble pops and we are just done. Don’t you think this idea of an afterlife is simply a way to get people to behave better.”

Guy B: “Who’s to say. I can’t say I know”.

Guy A: “I mean, this whole ‘be good now so you will be rewarded in an the afterlife’ or ‘miss-behave now and you will be punished in the afterlife’ – what a bunch of bunk. I think the whole Christian religion is just to keep people from living their own life.

I’m listening to this and wanting to jump in with some wise words that would open this guys eyes to what he’s missing but the words just don’t come. Of course this frustrates me to no end.

Later, after sleeping on it and thinking a little more I find I’m glad I didn’t say anything. In this case I find that God was restraining me because He wanted me to think a little more about what I believe and why. Some thoughts….

1) Guy A isn’t acknowledging a supreme God – how am I revealing God to those around me?
2) Guy A doesn’t seem to know who Jesus is – how do I go about revealing Jesus to others?
3) Guy A has a perspective of Christianity based on what he has observed – what can I be doing to start changing that view the world is building?

It seems that evangelism is missing the mark in today’s society. Sure we are carrying the Gospel to people but are we interpreting it appropriately? Our message centers around the concept that we are all sinners, our sin separates us from God, the penalty of sin is death, God paid that penalty through Jesus Christ so that we could have relationship with Him. All this is true but we too often leave out the last part – Jesus rose from the dead so that we could have new life through Him.

I’m becoming more and more convicted that our emphasis in today’s society needs to center on the Gospel of John. Our culture is growing increasingly “relevatistic” – there is no absolute truth so the idea that we all sin isn’t convicting people. However, we do see more and more people finding that they are “unfulfilled” – they aren’t finding any meaning in their lives. This is the missing part of the Gospel message. When we choose Jesus as Lord and Savior, Almighty God enters us as the Holy Spirit, giving us new life in Him. As we submit our will to His we begin to live the life that He created us for which is immensely satisfying.

Maybe it’s time we started telling people about Jesus by showing them a fulfilled life!

iPad envy

So I finally broke down and bought an iPad. I’ve been lusting for one for months and finally gave in to the temptation. I tried justifying my actions in many ways but finally came down to “why not.” I had the money and yes, it is a splurge but I’ve been busting my butt at work for the last 3 months and feel entitled to a splurge.

I have to admit it is awesome. Typing is a far better experience than the iPhone (this post is done using the iPad).

Loving it so far!!!
